About Denver Samoyed Rescue (DSR)

Denver Samoyed Rescue (DSR) was officially formed in 1993 to assist abandoned, unwanted, or otherwise neglected Samoyeds find new homes.  The group functions as a committee of the Denver Samoyed Association (as approved by the DSA governing board) and works with individuals, local animal shelters, as well as the local All Breed Rescue Network, and the national Samoyed Club of America Rescue coordinator.

It is also the goal of DSR to help educate the public about the Samoyed breed, to counsel owners who are considering surrendering their dogs to work through their problems so the dog may remain with them, and upon request, to aide law enforcement officials with evaluating bite cases.  DSR also acts as a safety net for breeders who have lost track of a puppy they've  placed, and as another possible source of information for owners who have lost their Samoyed.  All dogs placed by DSR will be spayed or neutered before going to a new home, or a foster home, in order to prevent further overpopulation of the breed.

Why Surrendered

M

Ollie

3 yrs

Fostered

Ollie is a 3-year old male Samoyed (maybe a mix).  He is a gentle soul, and has one of the most delightful personalities we have ever encountered.  He is being listed as a special needs dog because he has a skin disease known as Sebaceous Adenitis (SA) which requires management of his skin with a routine of supplements and more frequent baths.

Ollie was found running at large and turned into a shelter.  Two weeks prior to the dog being found on the streets, the owners had brought him to the shelter to be euthanized, but the shelter refused. This shelter is small and at capacity, so they reached out to our rescue for help. It appeared in pictures that they sent us, that he dog had been shaved.  It was hard to really determine his breed type except for a few tufts of white hair and the signature tail over his back.

We had him transported to Denver, and he went directly to a foster home.  When we realized Ollie had not been shaved, he was seen by a veterinarian specializing in dermatology who confirmed the diagnosis of SA via a biopsy.  It is an auto-immune condition that causes inflammation of the skin and sometimes hair loss.  It is a condition that is known to occur in Samoyeds and some other breeds. In addition to hair loss, Ollie was about 15 pounds underweight.

Ollie is currently getting weekly medicated baths, plus supplements of fish oil and vitamins. On the advice of the veterinarian, we will cut the baths back to every other week, and then possibly once a month and evaluate.    In the 6 weeks we have had Ollie, he has re-grown a even layer of hair over his entire body, and gained 6 pounds.  He now weighs 51lbs.

Everyone who meets Ollie falls in love with him. He is a super friendly boy, greets any person he encounters with sheer happiness, loves kids, and gets along with other dogs.  He has been introduced to cats and seemed fine with them. Ollie knows basic obedience commands and walks well on a leash.  He rides comfortably in a crate in the car and is house trained. He is a medium activity dog that loves to go own walks and is tolerant with grooming.  He would need a 6' fence and/or proper containment when unsupervised, because he jumped a shorter fence when he was at the shelter.

If Ollie is a boy you would like to consider, please complete the Adoption Application.

It features loops to attach a fanny pack, first aid kit or water bottle. It adjusts from 28” to 54” for a great fit during summer hikes or over winter clothing.

Located on each side of the hike belt are 2 welded D-rings to hook each end of the tubular web bungee coupler. The coupler keeps the center of pull where it should be for balance and efficiency. Wolf Packs® Dog Packs:

The Wolf Packs vendor has generously allowed Denver Samoyed Rescue to offer their product as a fundraiser for our program.  DSR has chosen to offer the Banzai™ dog pack through our fundraiser.

These dog packs were designed and manufactured by a fellow Samoyed fancier.    The following description comes from the vendor's web site:

"The Banzai™ dog pack is Wolf Packs' top of the line design. Features on this pack include tough Ballistic nylon bush guards double as handy outer pockets that zip closed. Horizontal compression straps squeeze the load forward, toward the dog's shoulders (the strongest part of a dog's back). 3M Scotchlite reflective trim assures that your dog is visible to night time traffic. We use tough Cordura Plus nylon fabric for ths pack.

The Banzai is available in red, forest green, royal blue, purple, orange and the newest color is neon pink!  Ballistic nylon is always black. This item is made in the USA."
